Panthers Earn First League Win in Four-Set Thriller Over Spanaway Lake

In front of a loud and split crowd of Bonney Lake and Spanaway Lake fans, the Panthers made a statement in their SPSL 4A league opener, defeating the Sentinels 3–1 and securing their first league victory of the season.

Last season, Spanaway Lake finished 7th in the SPSL while Bonney Lake trailed just behind in 8th, with the Sentinels sweeping both matchups. But on Monday night, the Panthers flipped the script. Coming in 2–0, Bonney Lake carried confidence and grit, rallying past a tough start to prove this year might be different.

Set One: Slow Start

Bonney Lake’s Taylin Beers opened the night with a thunderous kill from the outside, but the Sentinels controlled the net with a wall of three blockers. Spanaway Lake held a commanding 15–10 lead midway through and despite a late Panthers push, the visitors stole the first set, 25–22.

Set Two: Panthers Punch Back

Beers again struck first, one of her 12 kills on the night, and sparked Bonney Lake’s offense. Kamryn Davisson added big swings to keep the score close early, and with the Panthers ahead 20–15, Jada Shipp sealed the set with a powerful kill to even the match, 25–23.

Set Three: Building Momentum

With the crowd fully engaged, Bonney Lake fed off the energy. Olivia Uhler took over on the right side with kill after kill, keeping the Panthers ahead 15–12. A run of long rallies swung momentum fully in Bonney Lake’s favor, and they closed it out 25–20 to take a 2–1 lead.

Set Four: Finishing the Job

The Panthers jumped out to a 4–2 lead before the Sentinels clawed back to tie it at 12–12. A well-timed timeout by head coach Eva Millan shifted momentum, and a massive block by Beers ignited the home crowd. Spanaway Lake fought to tie it again at 20–20, but Marley Joseph’s service run pushed the Panthers to match point, and Beers hammered down the final kill to seal the 25–22 win.
