Where Are They Now: Bonney Lake sprinter explodes onto the Division I stage
When Abby Wilson crossed the finish line at the Big Sky Championships, she didn’t just win a title, she announced herself as one of the fastest young sprinters in the conference.
For those back home, it wasn’t a surprise.
The Bonney Lake High School graduate, now competing at the University of Montana, has burst onto the Division I scene with a freshman season that’s quickly turning heads across the Big Sky.
And back in Bonney Lake, people are paying attention.
“It means a lot to me,” Wilson said. “It shows that I still have the support that I did when I ran for Bonney Lake.”

A freshman season that delivered
Wilson wasted little time adjusting to college competition. In her first indoor season with the Montana Grizzlies, she quickly established herself as one of the top sprinters in the Big Sky Conference.
Her breakout moment came on Jan. 17, when she delivered a record-setting 200-meter performance that helped earn her Big Sky Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors, the first time in more than a decade a Montana women’s track athlete had received the recognition.
From there, the momentum only grew.
Wilson went on to set Montana school records in both the 60-meter and 200-meter races and entered the conference championships ranked among the league’s best in both events.
At the Big Sky Indoor Championships, she delivered her defining moment.
Wilson captured the conference title in the 60 meters, breaking the championship record in the process and cementing one of the most dominant freshman debuts in recent Montana history.
For Wilson, the moment was about more than medals or times.
“I realized that all my hard work over these past couple months had paid off and that I have started my collegiate career on a great indoor season,” she said.

From Bonney Lake’s black and teal to the Big Sky
Wilson’s rise is a familiar story to those who watched her compete in black and teal at Bonney Lake High School. Known for her explosive speed and competitive drive, she was one of the area’s most electric sprinters before heading to Missoula.
Now, she’s carrying that same energy onto a much bigger stage, and bringing her hometown with her.
The continued support from Bonney Lake, she says, still resonates.
And that connection remains part of her motivation as she looks ahead.
Eyes on the next breakthrough
If Wilson’s freshman indoor season was a statement, she believes the next chapter could be even bigger.
With the outdoor season approaching, her goals are already clear, and ambitious.
“Outdoor is coming up and my biggest goal is breaking 23 in the 200m,” Wilson said. “After the 200s I ran indoor I know I am capable of cool things in that race. Next thing is working my hardest to go and compete at the outdoor conference meet.”

For a freshman who has already etched her name into a conference record book, that confidence is well-earned.
And if her early college career is any indication, Bonney Lake may still be watching the beginning of something special.
A hometown legacy still growing
In a community that takes pride in watching its athletes grow beyond high school, Wilson’s story is the kind that resonates deeply, a reminder that the roots planted in Bonney Lake can stretch far beyond city limits.
From record-setting sprints in Missoula to championship moments on the conference stage, Abby Wilson’s journey is still just getting started.
And back home, a town continues to cheer her on every stride of the way.
