Bonney Lake welcomed Olympia to town Wednesday in a matchup between two teams firmly in the middle of a competitive league race.

Coming in at 5-1 in league play, the Panthers faced a strong Olympia squad (4-2 league, ranked No. 32 in Washington on MaxPreps) that had already taken the first game of the series the day before. And from the start, the Bears showed why they’ve been one of the tougher teams in the state.

Junior Ryan Cannady got the call on the mound for Bonney Lake, but Olympia struck early. An RBI double in the first inning gave the Bears a 1-0 lead, and they continued to apply steady pressure throughout the game.

Olympia added a run in each of the next three innings, methodically building a 4-0 lead by the fourth. The Panthers turned to Lucas Miller in relief, and the senior settled things down, delivering a strong outing over five innings while striking out seven and keeping Bonney Lake within reach. Miller entered the game with a 0.96 ERA over 7.3 innings pitched and continued to show his reliability on the mound.

Offensively, the Panthers struggled to find answers against Olympia starter Landyn Keister, who held Bonney Lake to just two hits through the first five innings.

But in the sixth, everything changed.

Lucas Miller, who entered the game swinging one of the hottest bats on the team with a .474 average, led off the inning with a hard-hit ball up the middle, reaching safely after an error pulled the first baseman off the bag. Wyatt Vincent followed with a sharp line drive to right field, putting two runners on and setting the stage for a potential rally.

That’s when Trenton Fowler delivered the moment the home crowd had been waiting for.

The senior launched a towering three-run home run over the center field fence, his second home run of the season, leading the team, instantly cutting the deficit to 4-3 and bringing the crowd to life in one swing.

The momentum continued as Ryan Orcutt stepped in and ripped a first-pitch double into right-center field, putting the tying run in scoring position. For a moment, it felt like the Panthers were ready to complete the comeback.

But Olympia answered.

The Bears added an insurance run in the seventh on a solo home run, and Bonney Lake couldn’t find the final push at the plate, falling 5-3 in a tightly contested game.

Despite the loss, the sixth-inning rally showcased the fight in this Bonney Lake team, which continues to prove it can compete with some of the top programs in the state.

The Panthers will look to bounce back Friday as they travel to Emerald Ridge for their next league matchup.
