It was more than just a baseball game Friday afternoon in Bonney Lake, it felt like something was building.

With the stands packed, a steady buzz in the air, and even a concession stand and team merchandise drawing a crowd, the atmosphere around Bonney Lake baseball had a different energy. And the Panthers delivered a performance to match it.

Coming into the matchup at 5-3-1 overall and sitting near the top of the league standings, Bonney Lake welcomed Puyallup to town, and rolled to a 12-2 mercy-rule win behind a dominant outing from senior Wyatt Vincent and an explosive offensive showing.

Vincent, the Panthers’ ace, set the tone early with a quick 1-2-3 first inning. Bonney Lake threatened in the bottom half with the bases loaded but couldn’t push a run across, keeping things scoreless after one.

Puyallup struck first in the second inning with a leadoff home run and added another run to take a 2-0 lead, briefly quieting the crowd.

But the Panthers’ response was immediate, and electric.

Ryan Orcutt led off the bottom of the second with a towering home run to center field, igniting a rally that flipped the game. Junior Parker followed with a double, Alex De La Cruz drove him in to tie the game, and Lucas Miller lined a shot into the gap to bring home another.

Vincent helped his own cause with an RBI fielder’s choice, and Trenton Fowler added to the surge as Bonney Lake erupted for six runs in the inning to take a commanding 6-2 lead.

Lucas Miller

Meanwhile, Vincent settled into a groove on the mound. The senior worked through six innings, allowing just two runs while striking out five and continuing to establish himself as one of the most reliable arms in the area. Through 22 innings this season, Vincent has racked up 28 strikeouts while anchoring the Panthers’ rotation.

The Panthers kept the pressure on in the third inning.

For the third straight inning, Bonney Lake loaded the bases, and continued to capitalize. A pair of hit batters forced in runs, and Brett Pederson delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-run double, extending the lead to 11-2 and putting the game firmly out of reach.

Ryan Cannady

Bonney Lake finished with 11 hits on the day, continuing a trend of balanced offensive production. Lucas Miller has been one of the team’s hottest hitters, batting .457 with a team-high 16 RBIs, while junior Ryan Cannady continues to be a force at the top of the order, hitting .467 and contributing across the board.

The Panthers added the finishing touch in the sixth.

With the game well in hand, Cannady stepped to the plate and launched a towering home run to center field, ending the game via mercy rule and bringing the crowd to its feet.

It was the kind of performance that matched the energy surrounding the program, a team playing with confidence and a community starting to rally behind it.

Bonney Lake will look to keep that momentum rolling Tuesday as they travel to Olympia to take on the Bears.
