Bonney Lake Baseball Held Scoreless in 4-0 Loss to Yelm in League Matchup

On a cool, overcast Tuesday afternoon, Bonney Lake hosted Yelm in a tightly contested league matchup between two teams sitting close in the standings.

The Panthers entered at 7-8-1 overall, while the Tornados came in at 8-8, setting the stage for an evenly matched battle. But despite a strong outing on the mound, Bonney Lake couldn’t find the timely hit, falling 4-0 in the first game of the two-game series.

Wyatt Vincent got the start for the Panthers and looked sharp early. The senior retired the side in order in both the first and second innings, setting the tone as Bonney Lake looked to settle into the game.

But in the third, Yelm capitalized on an opportunity.

After a leadoff runner reached on an error, the Tornados strung together a couple of hits and took advantage of defensive miscues to plate three runs. That inning proved to be the difference.

From there, Vincent settled back in and continued to compete. The senior delivered a complete-game performance, striking out nine while allowing five hits and just one earned run, keeping the Panthers within reach throughout.

Offensively, Bonney Lake struggled to break through despite making solid contact. Hard-hit balls consistently found gloves, grounders right at shortstop and well-struck balls tracked down in the field, as the Panthers were held scoreless on five hits.

Lucas Miller led the way at the plate, turning in a perfect 3-for-3 performance and accounting for more than half of the team’s hits. Trenton Fowler and Aidan Sampson each added a hit, but the Panthers couldn’t string together the timely offense needed to push runs across.

As the game moved into the fifth inning, a light drizzle began to fall, but it had little impact as both teams continued to grind through a defensive battle.

Bonney Lake had a late opportunity in the sixth after Miller collected his third hit and the Panthers put runners on, but they couldn’t capitalize as Yelm’s defense held firm.

The Tornados added an insurance run in the seventh to extend the lead to 4-0 and close out the game.

Despite the result, Vincent’s complete-game effort and Miller’s consistency at the plate stood out in a game where runs were hard to come by.

The Panthers will look to bounce back quickly as they travel to Yelm for the second game of the series, with weather potentially playing a role once again.
