In a clash of two teams seeking their first win of the season, it was the Bonney Lake Panthers who finally shook off the early-season struggles, securing a dominant 5-0 victory over the Spanaway Lake Sentinels on Tuesday. Both teams, new to the SPSL 4A division after moving up from the PCL 3A, had their sights set on making a mark, but it was the Panthers who put their stamp on the match under ideal tennis conditions—overcast skies typical of the Pacific Northwest.
Â
Leading the charge for Bonney Lake was #1 singles player Gavin Orozco, who battled through illness to beat his opponent, Mark Fromming, 6-0, 6-1. Despite not feeling 100%, Orozco’s precision and resilience were evident from the start, as he controlled the tempo and cruised to a quick victory.
Â
In #2 singles, Evan Lane followed suit, making quick work of Spanaway Lake’s Semaj Turner with a nearly identical line, 6-0, 6-1. Lane’s solid serving and groundstroke accuracy left Turner little room to counter, ensuring the Panthers stayed firmly in control of the match.
Â
Bonney Lake’s #1 doubles team of Thomas Howard and Jarrett Sroka continued the theme of dominance, taking out Kylen Harrell and Wyatt Hammer 6-2, 6-0. The chemistry between Howard and Sroka was undeniable, as they effortlessly moved across the court, outmatching their opponents with quick reflexes and tactical placement.
Â
The most hard-fought match of the day came at #2 doubles, where Adam Quinto and Cameron Munsch faced Spanaway Lake’s Suni Riem and Logan Johnson. While the opening set was tightly contested, Quinto and Munsch maintained their composure, pulling out a 6-4, 6-1 victory after a lengthy first set that showcased the grit and determination of both teams.
Â
Rounding out the day was the #3 doubles pairing of Holden Mann and Jacob Acosta
, who delivered the most decisive result of the evening. In Acosta’s first varsity match, the duo steamrolled their opponents, Junior Maldonado and Ezra Fluger, with a lightning-quick 6-0, 6-0 finish. Acosta, called up to the varsity squad for this match, wasted no time making an impact, combining with Mann for the Panthers' only shutout.
Â
The Panthers will look to carry that momentum into their next match, a home league showdown against South Kitsap on Thursday, September 19th.
Â
For now, though, the Panthers can savor their breakthrough win, knowing they’ve taken the first step in what could be a defining season in the SPSL 4A.
