Meet Morgan Berg, a senior outfielder for the Bonney Lake Panthers softball team who enters her final high school season with confidence, perspective, and a renewed love for the game. After an impressive junior campaign where she led the team in batting average and runs scored while ranking near the top in several other categories, Berg has grown into both a leader and a steady presence at the top of the Panthers’ lineup.
Finding Confidence at the Plate
Berg’s breakout junior season didn’t come without its challenges. Early in the year, she found herself struggling at the plate in a way she hadn’t experienced before.
“I had never really had trouble hitting like that before,” Berg said.

During one game, just before stepping into the batter’s box, a coach pulled her aside and offered a small adjustment to her swing. The tweak made an immediate impact. Berg stepped up and launched two back-to-back home runs, and from that moment on, something shifted.
“After that small fix, everything kind of clicked for me,” she said. “I stopped stepping into the box wondering if I was going to get a hit, I already knew I was.”
That confidence helped Berg thrive in the leadoff spot, where she focused on setting the tone for the Panthers each game. In the offseason, she worked to build on that success by spending more time in the gym, lifting weights and training to become stronger and faster.
“By gaining more muscle I was able to increase the power in my swing and my arm,” Berg said.

Stepping Into Leadership
Now a senior captain, Berg finds herself in a different role on a younger Bonney Lake team. Just a year ago, there were six seniors ahead of her on the roster. Today, she’s one of the veterans.
“It’s kind of a weird feeling being one of the oldest on the team this year,” Berg said.
For Berg, leadership doesn’t always come naturally. She describes herself as a quiet person, but the responsibility of being a captain has pushed her to step outside her comfort zone.
“Being a leader on the team is a different experience,” she said. “I’ve had to step outside my comfort zone in order to help lead the team.”

A Love for the Game
Berg grew up playing just about every sport imaginable. Her parents kept her busy with basketball, volleyball, soccer, and even dance. But softball was the sport that stuck.
A big reason for that was her older sister.
“My sister played softball too,” Berg said. “Watching her play is what got me into it.” Some of her earliest memories involve backyard practices with her dad and sister. “I would always include myself even though I could barely even catch a ball,” she said.
By age seven, Berg was playing Little League, and by twelve she had joined a club team. From that point forward, softball became a central part of her life.
Through it all, her father has been a constant presence.
“There has not been a single game my dad hasn’t been to,” Berg said. “From my very first little league game to my senior season, even my football games, he has always been there to support me.”

Looking Ahead
While softball has played a major role in Berg’s life, she has decided that her competitive playing days will likely end after high school.
“For a long time I wanted to play in college,” Berg said. “But I decided that wasn’t for me.”
Instead, Berg is focused on her academic future. She currently plans to pursue a degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, with the goal of becoming an ultrasound technician.
For now, she plans to stay local while she begins that journey.

Enjoying the Final Season
As Berg begins her final season in a Panthers uniform, her biggest goal may be the simplest one.
“To have fun,” she said.
In the past, she admits she sometimes put too much pressure on herself to perform. This year, she’s focused on enjoying every moment of her senior season.
“This team is very young with a lot of underclassmen, so it sort of feels like a fresh start and a new team,” Berg said.
Still, her competitive drive hasn’t gone anywhere.
“I obviously want to win,” she added with a smile.

More Than Just Softball
When she’s not on the field, Berg enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling, and taking pictures, especially in sunny places near the beach.
“I love seeing the beauty in the world,” she said.
She also has a creative side and enjoys styling hair, something she’s gotten plenty of practice with growing up alongside her three sisters.
This year she even added another sport to her résumé, joining the Panthers flag football team despite never having played before.
“I wasn’t even planning on playing until the week before practices,” she said. “I just decided why not.”
The decision paid off in a big way. Berg quickly found success on the field and earned First Team All-League honors as a wide receiver.
Whether she’s leading off a softball game, stepping into a leadership role for a young Panthers team, or trying something completely new, Berg continues to prove that confidence, hard work, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone can lead to some unforgettable moments.
