February was a month packed with elite performances, state finals, and championship moments for Bonney Lake High School athletes. With three state champions emerging from the winter sports season, selecting the Athlete of the Month was no easy task. However, one performance stood out among the rest—Colby Ducatt’s dominant run at the Mat Classic XXXVI, where he defeated Sunnyside’s Christop Villanueva (45-1) in double overtime to capture the 4A 150-pound state title.
Ducatt, a senior, entered the state tournament with a 38-2 record and proved why he was one of the best in the state. He showcased his dominance from the opening round, winning his first match with a pin in just 1:23. He continued his strong run with a fall in 4:26 and another in 3:31, advancing to the championship match against Villanueva, who had been undefeated all season.
In one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament, Ducatt battled Villanueva through double overtime, ultimately pulling off a 2-1 tiebreaker victory to claim the state championship. The win not only secured his place in Bonney Lake wrestling history but also handed Villanueva his only loss of the season.
Beyond his Mat Classic triumph, Ducatt also notched a key victory earlier in February at the WIAA District 3 4A SPSL Championships, where he defeated Lake Harris (Yelm) by decision to win the district title. These victories capped off a historic month for the senior wrestler, who was a force on the mat every time he competed.
With his relentless work ethic, clutch performances, and ability to shine under pressure, Colby Ducatt is a deserving recipient of The Bonney Lake Insider’s Athlete of the Month for February.
This award is proudly sponsored by Applebee’s in Bonney Lake, and as part of the honor, Colby will receive a $25 gift certificate to enjoy a meal at his local Applebee’s.
Congratulations, Colby!
