In a season many expected to be a rebuilding year for the Bonney Lake Panthers girls basketball team, sophomore standout Izzy Meki has emerged as a driving force behind the Panthers' unexpected rise to the top of the SPSL 4A standings. Through December, the Panthers defied the odds, claiming first place in one of the state’s most competitive divisions and earning a No. 46 state ranking. The Bonney Lake Insider is thrilled to recognize Izzy Meki as the December Athlete of the Month for her remarkable contributions to this inspiring turnaround.

The Panthers entered this season facing a series of challenges. They lost key seniors to graduation, said goodbye to their long-time head coach, and transitioned into the highly competitive SPSL 4A division. The hurdles were clear, and fans braced for what many assumed would be a transitional year. But this squad, fueled by team chemistry and a few breakout performances, has flipped the narrative. At the center of it all is Meki, a versatile small forward and point guard who has become a consistent scorer, a relentless defender, and an undeniable leader on the court.

Meki’s December stats tell the story of a player hitting her stride. She’s averaging 16 points per game for the month, but it’s her recent four-game stretch that has Panthers fans buzzing. In that span, Meki has been averaging 25 points per game, highlighted by a 31-point performance against Kentwood and a 29-point outing against Thomas Jefferson, where she came within one three-pointer of tying Bonney Lake’s single-game record. Her ability to score at all three levels—driving to the basket, pulling up for mid-range jumpers, and sinking threes—has made her a nightmare for opposing defenses.

While Meki’s offensive fireworks grab headlines, her contributions extend beyond scoring. Her tenacity on defense, ability to crash the boards, and knack for creating opportunities for her teammates have been instrumental in Bonney Lake’s success. Meki’s game against Graham-Kapowsin showcased her all-around talent, as she recorded 21 points, six rebounds, and four steals.

The Panthers’ surge to first place is a testament to the team’s collective effort, but there’s no denying that Meki has been a large reason for their success. Her performances in December have not only helped propel Bonney Lake to the top of the SPSL 4A but have also cemented her status as one of the most exciting young players in the league. And with the heart of the season still ahead, there’s every reason to believe Meki and the Panthers are just getting started.

As part of the honor, Izzy Meki will receive a $25 gift certificate to Applebee’s, courtesy of the restaurant’s sponsorship of the Bonney Lake Insider Athlete of the Month award.
