Bonney Lake Boys Golf Battles Sumner in SPSL Showdown at High Cedars

An overcast sky settled over High Cedars Golf Club on Monday afternoon, with clouds threatening rain but never quite delivering. A light breeze moved across the course, creating conditions that weren’t ideal, but far from unplayable.

And with Sumner, Bonney Lake’s down-the-hill rival, on the other side, the atmosphere didn’t need sunshine to bring energy. Matches between the Panthers and Spartans rarely do.

As familiar as High Cedars is to Bonney Lake, this version of the course came with a twist.

The white tees had been pushed back roughly 30 to 40 yards, adding noticeable length and forcing players to rethink club selection throughout the round. In some cases, the difference was dramatic. Hole No. 2, which played at just 110 yards the previous week, stretched to nearly 180 yards, completely changing the approach.

The greens added another layer of difficulty. Recently plugged, they lacked their usual smoothness, forcing players to rely more on feel than precision.

Match Play & Groups

Bonney Lake split into three groups for the match, with Stephen Lucash and Caiden O’Mahoney leading things off, followed by Luke Nelson and Owen Yost in the middle group, and Landon Fuller and Aidan Johnson rounding out the lineup. Each pairing brought a different dynamic to the course, navigating both the challenging conditions and a strong Sumner lineup.

Nelson and Lucash Lead the Way

At the top of the leaderboard, Stephen Lucash and Luke Nelson delivered standout performances, each carding a 2-over 38 to tie for first place overall in the full field.

Lucash’s round was a testament to consistency and toughness. Playing through injury, the junior opened with seven straight pars, holding even through the first seven holes before finishing at +2. It was a composed, disciplined round under less-than-ideal circumstances.

Caiden O'Mahoney

Nelson, the Panthers’ senior captain, took a more dramatic route to his 38.

After starting 3-over through two holes, Nelson flipped the momentum entirely, playing the remaining holes at 1-under. His round was highlighted by a pair of clutch birdies, first on the par-5 fifth where he stuck a wedge to within five feet, and later on the par-4 seventh, where he drained a long-range putt, estimated around 50 to 60 feet, that stood out as one of the shots of the day.

Gritty Efforts Across the Lineup

Owen Yost turned in one of the grittiest performances of the day, battling through illness to shoot a 43 (+7). His round included key pars on holes No. 2 and No. 6, helping steady his score despite the physical challenge.

Landon Fuller

Caiden O’Mahoney posted a 47, highlighted by a steady stretch in the middle of his round as he worked to keep Bonney Lake in contention.

In the final group, Landon Fuller and Aidan Johnson each carded rounds of 49.

Johnson’s performance tells a bigger story than the scorecard. Having only picked up golf a few months ago, he is already competing at the varsity level, an encouraging sign for the program’s future. His round included a standout moment on hole No. 6, where he recorded a par, showing flashes of the growth that continues to develop.

Final Result

In the end, Sumner’s depth proved to be the difference, as the Spartans took the match 205–215, handing Bonney Lake a 10-stroke loss.

But the margin doesn’t fully capture how competitive the round felt.

Looking Ahead

Even in defeat, the Panthers showed strong individual performances and resilience in tough conditions. With Senior Night approaching Wednesday and the league tournament at Gold Mountain next week, Bonney Lake will look to build on the positives and continue trending upward at the right time.
