In a clash that showcased both skill and determination, the Bonney Lake Panthers traveled to Lakes High School to kick off their league campaign against the Lakes Lancers. The stage was set for an epic battle as the Panthers, last year's second-place finishers with a commendable 10-2 record, faced off against the Lakes team, who landed fourth in the standings with a 6-6 record. With Bonney Lake securing victories in their previous encounters last year, anticipation hung in the air as the two teams took to the diamond on a delightful March day in Lakewood.

Senior Matt Alexander took the mound for the Panthers, shouldering the responsibility of the starting pitching role with confidence. His four innings of work were a testament to his skill, tallying three strikeouts, three walks, and conceding just one earned run en route to clinching the win. The defensive battle commenced early, with both teams showcasing their resilience in the opening inning.

However, it was Lakes who drew first blood in the second inning, driving in a run and asserting their presence. Yet, the Panthers swiftly retaliated in the third inning, with freshman Ryan Cannady exhibiting his speed and savvy on the base paths. Cannady's walk, steal of second, and adept base running paved the way for second baseman Eli Hubbard to bring him home, leveling the score.

Defensively, the Panthers remained strong throughout the game, with catcher Trevor Younce exhibiting exceptional prowess behind the plate. Younce's flawless 3-for-3 performance in throwing out advancing baserunners underscored Bonney Lake's defensive fortitude.

The fourth inning saw the Panthers seize control of the game, with senior Carson Hughes delivering a standout performance at the plate. Hughes' second double of the game drove in two crucial runs, extending Bonney Lake's lead. A subsequent hard-hit single by senior Trevor Younce further solidified the Panthers' advantage, with the team now up 4-1.

Although the Lancers mounted a comeback with a lone run, their efforts fell short against a resolute Panthers defense. Younce's stellar pitching in the following inning, coupled with strategic defensive plays, ensured that Lakes' offensive threats were contained.

As the game entered its final stages, Bonney Lake remained relentless in their pursuit of victory. Senior Caleb Carbonell's pinch-hit appearance in the seventh inning drove in the final run, effectively sealing the Panthers' triumph with a 5-2 lead. Wyatt Vincent's composed performance on the mound in the closing moments extinguished any hopes of a Lakes resurgence.

The game was characterized by a flurry of steals, with multiple players showcasing their speed and agility on the basepaths. Notable contributions came from Cannady 3, Younce 2, Hughes, Gavin Thunstrom, Jake Williams, and Vincent, who collectively racked up an impressive tally of stolen bases.

Offensively, Carson Hughes emerged as a driving force for the Panthers, delivering a stellar 2-for-4 performance with two doubles, two RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored. His commanding presence at the plate set the tone for Bonney Lake's offensive onslaught.

With this commanding victory under their belts, the Panthers now turn their attention to their next challenge, a non-league match against Southridge High School. As they continue their quest for dominance on the diamond, Bonney Lake's resounding triumph serves as a potent reminder of their championship aspirations.
