Meet Layne Weir, the heart and hustle of Bonney Lake basketball. The senior power forward combines a deep understanding of the game with a relentless drive to succeed. But basketball is just one part of Layne’s story—a story filled with dreams of state championships, a future of service, and a passion for helping others.
Chasing Dreams: From Bonney Lake to the Big Dome
As Layne gears up for his final high school basketball season, his sights are firmly set on one goal: playing at the Washington State High School Basketball Championships in the Tacoma Dome.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to play in the Dome,” Layne shared, his eyes lighting up at the thought of taking his game to one of Washington’s biggest stages. For Layne, the road to state isn’t just about personal achievement—it’s about creating memories with his teammates and solidifying the bond that has grown through years of bus rides and late-night practices.
“Those bus rides after away games are some of my favorite memories,” Layne admitted. “The team chemistry always gets stronger during those moments.”
A Journey to the Court
Layne’s love for basketball began early. Growing up in Bonney Lake, he immersed himself in every sport he could find: soccer, baseball, football, and basketball. But it was around sixth grade that Layne realized basketball was different.
“I felt like I understood the game on a deeper level,” he said. “That’s when I decided to commit my time to it.”
Layne honed his skills playing AAU basketball, starting with Team P.U.R.E and eventually joining an Adidas Gold Circuit team based out of Auburn. Competing at such a high level taught Layne discipline, grit, and the value of teamwork—traits that have defined his high school career.
Life Beyond the Game
While Layne dreams of attending the University of Washington, his plans for the future extend far beyond basketball.
“My dream school would be UW because it’s so close to home,” he said. But regardless of where he lands, Layne’s passion for helping others shapes his goals.
“After college, I want to become a firefighter,” he explained. “And with the time off that comes with firefighting, I’d like to do real estate on the side.”
That drive to assist others isn’t new. Over the summer, Layne devoted time to teaching younger kids how to play basketball. “It’s a sport I’ve loved my whole life, and I really enjoyed helping others learn it,” he said.
Off the Court: A Love for Golf and Life’s Simple Joys
When he’s not working on his jump shot or preparing for game day, Layne can often be found on the golf course.
“I play golf all the time,” he said with a grin. “If I wasn’t committed to basketball, I’d probably dedicate more time to golf—it’s something I really enjoy.”
Beyond his athletic pursuits, Layne treasures moments spent with friends, staying active, and simply soaking up the joys of high school life.
A Leader, Mentor, and Dreamer
As Layne enters his final season with the Panthers, he does so with a unique blend of gratitude and ambition. Whether it’s chasing a state championship, teaching kids the fundamentals of basketball, or preparing for a future as a firefighter, Layne is driven by a desire to make the most of every opportunity.
“My hopes for this year’s basketball season are simple,” he said. “To go to State and create memories with my teammates that we’ll never forget.”
With his passion, dedication, and love for the game, Layne Weir is leaving a legacy at Bonney Lake that goes far beyond the scoreboard.
Layne Weir isn’t just a standout on the court—he’s a young man committed to making an impact wherever life takes him. And for Bonney Lake, that’s something worth cheering for.
