Haley Grimit: Making History in Bonney Lake’s First Flag Football Season

Haley Grimit

Meet Haley Grimit. A junior at Bonney Lake High School and a standout multi-sport athlete and one of the founding members of Bonney Lake High School’s first-ever girls flag football team, Haley has already carved her name into school history. A natural competitor with speed, vision, and a calm-but-deadly playmaker’s instinct, she stepped onto the field for a brand-new program and delivered its very first touchdown, an unforgettable moment that set the tone for a team writing its story from page one. A soccer player at heart, a running back by opportunity, and a leader through both effort and joy, Haley represents exactly what a first-year program needs: courage, curiosity, and the willingness to dive into something completely new.

A Moment Unlike Anything She’s Felt Before

When Haley crossed into the end zone for Bonney Lake’s first touchdown in girls flag football history, the moment didn’t register immediately. It wasn’t until she heard the roar of the crowd behind her, and her teammates crashing in around her, that she realized what she had done.

“It was honestly unreal,” Haley said. “It felt so much more exciting than scoring a goal in soccer because it was the first touchdown ever. I’ve never experienced anything like it.”

A new sport.

A new team.

And a memory she’ll carry for life.

Joining the Program’s First Chapter

Haley didn’t join the team because of expectations or pressure, she joined because it felt fun, new, and right.

“Me, my family, and my friends used to play casual flag games for fun,” she said. “When the school finally started a real team, I knew I wanted to be part of the program’s first chapter.”

What began as a spark of curiosity quickly turned into something meaningful: the chance to help build something entirely from scratch.

A Running Back With Natural Instincts

Stepping into the running back role, Haley found early comfort in the pieces of the game that came naturally.

“Reading the defense and finding open spaces clicked the fastest,” she said. “Once I learned when to cut and how to connect better with the quarterback, it started feeling natural.”

But the learning curve was real.

“Memorizing plays, routes, and hand signals was definitely a challenge at first,” she added. “After practicing them over and over, I felt a lot more confident.”

Her growth has been fast, and impressive.

A Foundation Built Through Soccer and Track

Though flag football is new, sports are not. Haley has been playing soccer most of her life, and she’s competed in track as well, two sports that built the foundation for the athlete she’s become.

“I’ve always loved the fast pace of soccer and the constant action,” she said. “Playing a variety of sports taught me competitive skills and teamwork that carry over into flag football.”

That blend of speed, instinct, and athleticism shows every time she takes a handoff.

First-Game Nerves Turned Into Pure Fun

Haley admits it, she was nervous stepping onto the field for the first official game. The unknowns were real. The moment was big.

“I had never played in a real flag football game before and didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “Everything felt new and overwhelming.”

But once the game started, the nerves didn’t stand a chance.

“As the game went on, my nerves slowly went away. It was so fun to be out there with my best friends and play together.”

The laughter, the energy, the excitement, it all took over.

Chemistry Built Faster Than Expected

Despite being a first-year team with limited time on the field, Haley says something special has already formed within the group.

“Our chemistry has been really strong because we’re all very competitive,” she said. “We connect really well both on and off the field, and I think our teamwork already shows.”

Two weeks of practice.

One game.

And the foundation of something real.

“Everyone supports each other while still pushing each other to do their best,” Haley added. “It makes being part of this team so fun.”

Life Beyond the Sidelines

Off the field, Haley is just as active, and just as full of energy.

“I love hanging out with my friends and spending time with my family,” she said. “I ski in the winter, and in the summer I love traveling to new places, especially hot locations!”

She brings the same joy and spirit to life that she brings to the field, one of the reasons she’s already become such an important part of Bonney Lake’s inaugural flag football season.

A Legacy Already Taking Shape

Haley Grimit didn’t just participate in Bonney Lake’s first flag football game, she made history in it. Her touchdown marked the beginning of a new era, a moment that future Panthers teams will look back on with pride.

And as this brand-new program grows, athletes like Haley are giving it a heartbeat—one cut, one sprint, one smile at a time.

The first chapter has been written.

And she helped write it in bold.
