Bonney Lake Boys Tennis Sweeps Spanaway Lake 5-0 to Open New Home Courts
After dropping their first two matches of the season to a pair of the SPSL 4A's toughest teams, Bonney Lake finally got to christen its brand new home courts, and the Panthers made sure the occasion went their way.
Bonney Lake opened the year 0-2 against Puyallup and Emerald Ridge, two of the toughest opponents on this year's schedule, before returning home to host Spanaway Lake. On a cloudy, overcast afternoon that offered little of the sun glare tennis players usually have to fight through, the Panthers took care of business, sweeping all five reported matches to notch their first win of the season.
It was also the debut of Bonney Lake's newly built courts, which held up beautifully despite ongoing construction still going on around the site.
Munsch Dominant at #1 Singles
Senior Cameron Munsch set the tone at #1 singles, rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 win. Munsch played an aggressive, complete match, mixing in big serves with trips to the net and sharp, deep volleys that left his opponent with few answers. It was the kind of performance that reinforces why Munsch enters the year as one of the top individual players in the SPSL 4A.
Nguyen Cruises at #2 Singles
Senior Adrian Nguyen handled what looked like the most competitive individual matchup of the day and still made it look easy, winning 6-0, 6-1. Nguyen dropped an early game in the second set but answered by reeling off the next two, never letting his opponent find any real rhythm.
Doubles Sweep the Board
The doubles lineup was just as lopsided, and each pairing brought its own flavor to the sweep.
Juniors Everett Brashears and Lucas Nethercott were the first team off the court, blitzing through their #3 doubles match 6-0, 6-2 in record time. Their pace set the tone early that this was going to be a quick afternoon for Bonney Lake.
At #2 doubles, senior William Vescio and sophomore Isaac Wernert looked just as strong, punishing Spanaway Lake with consistent play on their way to a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Seniors Cory Lozano and Logan Schaff held up their end at #1 doubles behind great net play and solid placement, closing out a 6-0, 6-2 win. They gave up the most games of any Panther pairing on the day with two, but there was never any doubt in the air. This was a sweep from start to finish.
Looking Ahead
The win gets Bonney Lake back on track after a rough start to the season against two of the SPSL 4A's stronger programs. With a veteran group leading the way at every position, the Panthers will look to build on this momentum heading into a busy stretch. Bonney Lake heads to Enumclaw for a non-conference match Monday, then makes the long trip to South Kitsap before returning home to host Curtis next Thursday, a run of competitive matches that will give a good early test of how far this team has come.
